As a bit (OK a lot) of an Apollo nerd, I was sad to hear of the passing of Jim Lovell, the CM Pilot of Apollo 8 and Mission Commander of Apollo 13 - the source of the “Houston, we’ve had a problem here” quote.

There are now only 5 Apollo astronauts alive who have walked or circled the moon.

The poverty premium. A 10% surcharge for those unable to pay in one go is completely unacceptable. #povertypremium

It’s beyond belief that rail and bus companies aren’t compelled to link their services.

This lack of integration means that public transport isn’t a viable option for many.

It’s time to run public transport for the public good, not private profit.

My BRAN colleagues at #Harlington station. Harlington station is one of many stations across the UK that will remain inaccessible for many years to come due to Appendix B of the PRM NTSN.

If the gov’t are serious about accessibility, Appendix B must go! More info in next post…. 1/2

When a corporate/public sector PR team trots out “lessons will be learned” following an incident, you can almost guarantee someone will have pointed out the same lessons for years prior - and been ignored.

A complete culture change is needed re low probability high consequence risks.

If the government genuinely has, as they said last week, an “unwavering commitment to improving (rail) accessibility” then ‘Appendix B’ of the PRM NTSN must be removed.

It’s a benchmark for inaction on step-free access provision at thousands of platforms across the UK.

Nothing quite irks the hard right media so much as working class people getting a good deal through the collective strength of trade unionism… 1/3 @aslefunion.bsky.social @rmtunion.bsky.social @tssa.bsky.social

Finally got round to buying this book, written during & from within the 60’s underground music scene.

My father, Spike Hawkins lived with the authors at the time. I also have a fleeting recollection (like most of my dad) that he featured within it.

Either of these, I don’t do fiction 🙂 Outstanding and vital. Both should be read by anyone in politics.

Who is standing up for an accessible rail network?

It's clearly not the National Infrastructure Commission.

The PM described rail accessibility as a 'basic requirement,' and the gov't recently stated that it recognises its social & economic benefits.

We need actions, not words.

This week I visited #Orgreave, including the now disused bridge leading up to Orgreave village.

They’ve removed almost every sign of Orgreave, but they can’t alter what happened on that day. It’s time for the truth. @orgreavejustice.bsky.social @aslefunion.bsky.social @yvettecooper-mp.bsky.social

I finally managed to visit the site of Orgreave Colliery & Coke Works today.

The seeds of the Hillsborough tragedy were sown at Orgreave.

Until we learn the lessons from the numerous miscarriages of justice in the UK, we will continue to repeat them.

2024 has been quite a year, with some excellent highs and ‘character building’ lows.

Much to do in 2025 and some brilliant people to do it with!

Wishing you all a peaceful Xmas and the happiest of New Years.

The ‘Xmas Bonus’ is now arriving in the accounts of those in receipt of certain benefits. This bonus, £10, not enough to buy a small round of drinks, has been frozen since December 1977. If its value had risen by inflation it would be worth around £65 today.

I’m deeply disappointed with the government’s decision to not pay out compensation to the #WASPI women.

What is the point of the Parliamentary Ombudsman if their findings of maladministration are so blatantly ignored.

And please, enough of the £22b black hole figure.

I’ve kept this stub for 44 years! Without doubt the best concert I’ve ever been to and showed a 13 year old just how powerful and emotional live music could be.

John Lennon had been killed just a few days earlier and Jon sang one of his songs.

Work pays the way. Art makes life worth living ❤️

Late autumn leaves at #Hexham Sele. In my minds eye, whenever I think of a park this is the park I return to.

Almost a quarter of the way through the 21st Century, much of the UK rail network remains as inaccessible as it was in the 19th.

At the current rate of progress, we won’t have a fully accessible network until the 22nd Century.
November 14, 2024 at 8:18 AM
The £3+ billion lost by the gov’t maintaining the 5p Fuel Duty cut could have been spent on much of the UK rail network accessible to all.

There’s welcome spending decisions, but beyond disappointing that it contained zero reference to additional funding for accessible 🚂 stations.
