Can I offer a distinction which may disentangle things? There are broadly two ways to submit a grant proposal: by invitation or by RFP. The first are absolutely based on relationships. But the latter - I always assumed - are based on merit; if that's not the case, then - yeah - super shady.

Organic life - i.e. us and all other species - deals with the inevitability of decay via reproduction and evolution - a way of retiring the old and creating a fresh generation. So unless AI figures out how to regenerate its hardware, we're all safe, no?
