Speaking as a landlord, this is EXACTLY what occurred to me. & the same excuses:"but I'm paying for it, You're not even paying for it...so why are you upset?" Trying to explain to a tenant that this residence is NOT THEIRS, so they can't alter it, just cuz they wanna....never ceases to amaze me.
