Our government should serve its people, not starve them. Yet 41 days into this shutdown, families are wondering how they’ll feed their children while Trump feeds his fragile ego and protects his political allies.

The American people deserve a government that fights for them — not against them.

This is who Speaker Johnson and House Republicans are fighting for: not working families, not seniors, not veterans, not children, but the same corrupt insiders who helped Trump cling to power.

Even after being ordered by the courts to fully fund SNAP, the Trump administration is in court not to reopen the government, not to help working families, but to block food aid for millions struggling to put food on the table during a shutdown Republicans created.

Today, Trump refuses to use that same power to feed hungry Americans.

Last night, he pardoned Rudy Giuliani and several other cronies who tried to overturn a free and fair election on his behalf. Using the presidency to shield those who attacked our democracy is not just an abuse of power — it’s a blatant display of his misguided priorities.

An empty promise of a future vote from this Republican Party and this President is meaningless. After forty days of this shutdown, Americans need action — not delay, not excuses, and not more broken promises.

Unlike Trump and Congressional Republicans, Democrats understand what affordability really means – and we will continue fighting to make it a reality for every American.

Nearly a year into Trump’s second term, one thing is clear: his policies are actively pricing working families out of the American Dream.

Today, under Trump’s record-breaking shutdown, the economy is losing $15 billion every week, 15 million Americans are projected to lose health coverage, and health care premiums are skyrocketing.

While Trump lies, the numbers don’t. Under President Biden, there was never a lapse in federal food assistance. Unemployment reached historic lows. The uninsured rate fell to a record low.

Let’s be clear: the so-called savings come from smaller portions, not lower prices. The facts are this: Food isn’t cheaper and Trump is no economic genius.

In a desperate attempt to spin the cost-of-living crisis created by his own economic policies, Trump is bragging that Thanksgiving dinners are “cheaper” than they were under the Biden administration.

My office has received numerous calls and emails from constituents shocked by their new premium notices – some facing bills that will double come January if Republicans don’t act to protect the ACA and the families who depend on it.

Here in Ventura County and the Conejo Valley, an estimated 37,000 residents are seeing their health care premiums skyrocket, and 34,000 stand to lose coverage altogether because of the unprecedented Republican assault on health care.

While Republicans turn a blind eye to the damage they’ve done to Medicaid, Medicare, and the Affordable Care Act, the American people are paying the price.
