9/ So what is the answer? I think a starting point is reforming NIH. Make NIH research more public-facing, streamline the grant process, and fund real-world issues like Behavioral health, social determinants of health (think housing, food insecurity), nutrition, and prevention strategies.

NIH granting is an arduous & thorough process. Every funded award represents hundreds of hours of labor, much of it unpaid, by multiple highly skilled and experienced scientists who write or review applications. Very few proposals are funded on the first round; most on revision; can take 18+ months

In addition, independent research institutes without students have no other sources of income and will be forced to close.
