I also wrote about Steven Angelides' A History of Bisexuality in my thread of books that were an influence on this novel. I highly rec it as a book that offered a productive way to rethink sexuality/gender when the orientation metaphor just didn't work for me, plus scads of interesting history.
A History of Bisexuality - Amazing book and huge influence on my own thinking abt sexuality and gender... Traces the society-wide discomfort with bisexuality back to how binary sexes were naturalized in -reaction- to discoveries that pointed at reality being far more multimodal and even reversible
