Some years ago I was involved in debugging an issue involving uninitialised memory on an embedded device. The symptoms were correlated with particular units - the contents were random over the population but tended to be very similar for one individual device.

I had one, and ran Debian on it! I could connect to the internet via IR to my phone, but ssh over GPRS felt slow even then.

You could also use the datagram mode instead of byte stream, as long as the maximum packet size isn't an issue (a couple of hundred kB IIRC, somewhat tuneable).

At the same time, no doubt the actual reason is to reduce the BOM cost a bit. 😄

As someone who doesn't usually replace perfectly functional devices every two years, it's only very recently I've stopped being annoyed at having to get more cables because all mine are micro (we still use devices with mini B).

I wonder if lots of hobbyists are similar.
