The fools! If you just cut the cube up into a stairstep pattern, every across always flows into a down or vice versa. No backwards entry needed!

If you have a triangle whose corners have integer coordinates, you can compute its exact area as the number of integer-coordinate points inside the triangle, plus 1/2 of the number of integer coordinate points along the edges, plus 1/2.
Here that's 6+1/2(1)+1/2=7.
