Unfortunately, the first premise is simply false. Emissions were at a record high last year. The "current pathway" is really wishful thinking and contingent on a lot of things happening that are seeming less likely given our current context.

It's wild to look back at these artifacts. The people we had participating is just amazing. This doesn't even include everyone who actually participated, though some of them may have come to the more biodemography-focused workshops: Ken Wachter, Noreen Goldman, Jane Menken...

Well, this is a reassuring plot 😬

Concentration index of the S&P 500: average market value of top 10% of stocks compared with the median stock. Now at record highs, comparable to the Great Depression and Dot-com bubble peak.

Well, this fills me with confidence in their algorithms!

I'm no AI researcher, but "James P. Hughes" doesn't even seem very close to "James H. Jones".

Hell, yeah. Possibly the coolest thing I’ve ever seen at the Stanford Shopping Center. Admittedly, a low bar, but this was actually cool.

The heat index is 106F today in Baltimore and IKEA is running on auxiliary power. V post-apocalyptic welcome for us.

Yeah, that's right (I just remember talking to Brian and Kim about it). There's also this.

Serious question: was this actually "law enforcement" or were these simply Noem's security (even if they work for a law-enforcement agency). The distinction seems like it matters. For example, what law did Senator Padilla break that warranted the man-handling and hand-cuffing?

OK, I had to quickly make a visit to the former bird site to grab a screencap of this gem!

Quite pleased with the outcome of a couple weeks' coding and banging my head against the desk. Now I just need to re-submit the damn paper.

Yeah, I think about this figure from Myrskyla et al. (2009) a lot in this context.

How concerning is this? Curious, I checked out how busy various ports are around the world using MarineTraffic. There are essentially no ships in LA/Long Beach, while Shanghai seems to be bustling. Is this typical? I feel like I always see lots of ships queuing when I fly into LAX.

I found this piece by @kjephd.bsky.social on the distinction between fascism and authoritarianism very illuminating.

That's a good one. Here's a spicy equivalent: Cumulative lifetime (self-reported) sex partners among Swedish men. It's almost like saying you've had 50 sex partners in your lifetime means something a bit more complex than actually having had sex with exactly 50 people! csss.uw.edu/Papers/wp31....

Wow, turns out it’s not even close. My powerlifter friend is Kiwi too, which is an odd coincidence. I guess they’ve got it figured out down there.
