Unfortunately, the first premise is simply false. Emissions were at a record high last year. The "current pathway" is really wishful thinking and contingent on a lot of things happening that are seeming less likely given our current context.

I'm no AI researcher, but "James P. Hughes" doesn't even seem very close to "James H. Jones".

We seek applicants for a tenure-track appointment at the assistant professor level in the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability in the field of Traditional Ecological Knowledge (also referred to as Indigenous and local knowledge, Indigenous science, Native science, and other similar terms) and its relevance to social and environmental sustainability. Topical research areas of interest include, but are not limited to: the role of fire and other aspects of Indigenous land stewardship in the changing climate; establishment and management of natural protected areas; conservation and application of the wild relatives of crops and animals; the ethical and responsible collection and use of socio-ecological data; environmental governance; the role of tribal food and land sovereignty and cultural revitalization for environmental sustainability; and two-eyed seeing, the multicultural approach to understanding the natural world using both Indigenous and Western sciences as independent, but complementary, ways of knowing. The range of expertise and facilities across Stanford University’s main campus, as well as Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve ('Ootchamin 'Ooyakma) and Hopkins Marine Station, provide opportunities to develop a research program that bridges Indigenous and Western knowledge systems. Our military is tactically excellent — “lethal” is the preferred term at the Pentagon these days — but great tactics without an effective strategy are useless, like a Ferrari without a steering wheel.

Yeah, I think about this figure from Myrskyla et al. (2009) a lot in this context.

How concerning is this? Curious, I checked out how busy various ports are around the world using MarineTraffic. There are essentially no ships in LA/Long Beach, while Shanghai seems to be bustling. Is this typical? I feel like I always see lots of ships queuing when I fly into LAX.

The place to look for fascism is in the politics and program of a political movement; it’s about how they talk and what they aim to do rather than in the structure of power. Of course, they want the authoritarian structure of executive-focused unchecked power and seek to build it where it’s lacking. But this is in service of the core fascist mission: a cultural rebirth in which the nation, understood as its (racially) pure or ‘true’ people, is saved from destruction and its enemies are purged from within. Thus, all forms of fascism are authoritarian, but not all authoritarianisms are fascist. Authoritarianism encompasses many non-fascist regimes. Recognizing the fascism of Trump II requires disaggregating these two projects.

That's a good one. Here's a spicy equivalent: Cumulative lifetime (self-reported) sex partners among Swedish men. It's almost like saying you've had 50 sex partners in your lifetime means something a bit more complex than actually having had sex with exactly 50 people! csss.uw.edu/Papers/wp31....
Histogram of the lifetime number of sex partners. The bins of the histogram are single values and there is clearly-visible and substantial heaping at round numbers (and other multiples of 5). In addition to the histogram, the plot contains two smooth fits (which are obviously terrible!) to two different power-law models because that was the style in them days. Indeed, the whole point of the working paper (and its related publications) was to critique the statistical (in the loosest sense) practice of fitting power-laws to the degree distributions of all social networks, particularly those that related to STI epidemiology.
