New article: "Risk loving and fat tails in the wealth distribution" by Aloisio Araujo, Juan Pablo Gama, and Timothy Kehoe. In a dynamic general equilibrium model risk-loving behavior by some investors generates unequal distributions of income and wealth.

Just back from giving a talk to 2nd year students on how to approach research, how to write a paper. Abhijit was coming after me (good thing he didn't go first, tough act to follow!)

It's a treat to have a paper highlighted in the NBER Digest!

Couples' choices about when to relocate offer a lens into how they value each person's career success. In both Sweden and Germany, they seem to prioritize men's careers, even when the woman has similar earning potential. bit.ly/MTO-T

A policy summary of our paper, featured in @voxdev.bsky.social. This is useful evidence for future reforms to public teacher hiring systems, like the one that should take place soon in Colombia!
🆕 How a teacher hiring reform in Colombia backfired

Today on VoxDev, Matias Busso @IADB, Sebastián Montaño @UofMaryland, @jmunozmorales.bsky.social @IESEG and Nolan Pope @UofMaryland outline how student outcomes suffered as a result of a teacher reform:

How a teacher hiring reform in Colombia backfired
A merit-based teacher hiring reform succeeded in recruiting teachers with better qualifications, but the replacement of more experienced teachers led to a decline in student outcomes.

Modern American planning is kind of the worst of both worlds: rigid micromanagement of development on private land combined with virtually no plan whatsoever for the public realm, e.g. streets and parks. Not how I would have designed the system!
You can live in a home with a backyard, and depending on the street network design and lot size, experience vastly different urban typologies.

West University Place and Katy are both within the Houston metro area, yet these single-family cities have vastly different densities.

These 18-year-olds were high school freshmen when COVID hit

They should be college freshmen now

The FAFSA disaster decreased enrollment overall (down 5%)

The affirmative action ban decreased black enrollment at selective schools (down 17%)
