An example of a study that only finds development under certain skills/measures is Borràs & Llanes (2022). Going abroad will not automatically increase people's language skills and we must bear in mind that, to grow our linguistic knowledge, we must use the language: create connections with people that share common interests, with whom to speak, join activities that promote language use, etc.

what an interesting topic! While going abroad is often perceived as the best way to increase someone's linguistic skills (& it can!), that may not always be the case. It depends on the skill under study, students' goals and personalities, and/or the social networks they develop (among others)
