Sounds like not just the immigration system is broken. Maybe the work system, the tax system and the citizenship system, too?

Thanks. I guess the US system is just completely different. In Germany you can't work legally/pay taxes if you don't have government issued ID. You can't rent a place or drive a car or send your kids to school without it either. So it's unimaginable for someone to build a whole life without papers.

How does it work that someone pays taxes but is also undocumented? Do they pay income tax? Then there must be documentation. They must have a tax number, their personal information must be on record somewhere. The authorities know they exist. In what sense are they undocumented?

Krass, dass eine junge FSJlerin hier anscheinend alleine Führungen macht und immer wieder dieses Grauen weitererzählen muss. Ich hoffe, dass es irgendeine Art von Supervision oder psychologische Betreuung für sie gibt.

I've been there twice. It was so lovely. I saw this beautiful heron (I think, bad with birds...) in the stream, in the middle of this massive city. It was incredible!

Nur zum allerletzten Punkt: Überkonfessionell bedeutet nicht "über-religiös", sondern wird verwendet, um alle christlichen Konfessionen (katholisch, evangelisch-lutherisch, freikirchlich, orthodox etc.) zu bezeichnen.

I'm not a historian but I am a German who learned about German history in school and I would put the idea of a German nation that has anything to do with today's Germany at 400 years tops.

Sure, the notion of a German nation has existed longer than a German state but I think even to claim one thousand (singular) years is ridiculous.

I don't see how there was a unified German "nation" before 1871 (or 1848) either. The German speaking areas were always split in many states/federations/kingdoms. Especially before 1848 a "German nation" only existed in some people's imagination.
