In essence is what you said, plants are becoming junk food and only those with a nice mechanism to process it will persist (butterflies probably won't be among those 😓)

Another mechanism for the decline is that butterflies could not get the sufficient P (more N less P) for their metamorphosis which is high P demanding due to the creation of a new body...At least, that's how we explained our results of this global meta-analysis doi.org/10.1111/gcb....
