For #flyday a Yellow-haired Sun Fly, Myathropa florea, seen in Siena, Italy 5/2023.

Also known as the Batman hoverfly for the pattern on its thorax.

Always exciting to find a class of arthropods I didn't know existed living in my yard-a quasi-centipede of class Symphyla, genus Hanseniella seen in dirt under a brick. Grateful to the whole #iNaturalist community for making these discoveries accessible to so many. #bugsky #inverts #macrophotography

I don't usually spend time photographing ants, not because they aren't cool but because they hardly ever stop moving!

This one (I think Camponatus subbarbatus) was tending aphids (sp?) on burnweed (Erechtites hieraciifolius), and I managed decent shots of both. #bugsky #inverts #macrophotography

Happy #flyday! Here is an eight-spotted tumbling flower beetle, Hoshihananomia octopunctata from July of this year.

If you look closely you can see I caught it excreting out a little clear ball. Don’t know if that is waste or a waxy secretion it will spread on its body.

Tiny Oregon Lady Beetle, Hippodamia oregonensis, seen on a flower high on a ski slope in Colorado this past July. This species seems to only inhabit high altitude habitats. #bugsky #insects #macrophotography #bloomscrolling

Masked #bee I saw today. She is bubbling to concentrate the slurry of nectar and pollen collected from the last few goldenrods and carried internally. She will leave a glob of this with each egg laid in a nest that she makes watertight by secreting a polymer coating. #insects #macrophotography

Some goth flies from last weekend to wrap up #flyday. Tachinid fly Juriniopsis adjusta and the appealingly named Wavy Mucksucker (Orthonevra nitida).

Happy #flyday ! A couple of gorgeous hoverflies from last weekend, gorgeous weather after a week of gloom in Atlanta. Spilomyia longicornis, (eastern hornet fly, which puts on an intimidating hornet imitation) and Helophilis fasciatus, narrow-headed marsh fly.

In late fall, male dark-winged sweat #bees (Lasioglossum fuscipenne) emerge in large numbers to loiter on the asters and hope to get lucky like this one did. (Females can be found in low numbers through spring and summer; anyone know about their life cycle?)

After a cold rainy week, a few #bees back on the remaining flowers today. This is a female masked bee, I think Hylaeus mesillae, on Solidago. Masked bees are not good pollinators because they carry pollen internally instead of on body hairs.
