Shift timing in general, along with seat height adjustment, are the most obvious problems I see in beginner cyclists.

Always coil cables in a loose circle alternating the direction of the loop with each coil, then use a Velcro wrap to secure. It’s called the roadie wrap. This prevents twists and tangles and ensures the longest life for your cable.
