He wasn't completely out of place with some of the other random looking TV people in the UK in the 70s, they were all about charisma (see Bruce Forsyth, who luckily wasn't a wrongun!) Add to that very public charity work, children's shows aimed at bringing wishes true, he was hiding in plain sight.
