It’s basically the best thing

I’m pleasantly surprised. This is much better than the silence—or worse, collaboration—that I honestly expected from the Dem upper brass. Fair play, Jeffries!

Silly? That’s three sig figs of precision!

I assume this is what people mean by “scientific socialism”

Having a fun little identity crisis today – this is actually quite reassuring. Thanks! :D

“Water beef” sounds like old-timey slang for edible pond scum or smth

We’ve finally found the proverbial one-sided coin

There is precisely a 0% chance that thing does anything but make you smell worse

…but also I kind of want one now

Doesn’t Trump really love Andrew Jackson for some godforsaken reason?

Quick, someone go get Johnny Horton’s “The Battle of New Orleans” stuck in his head! The Gulf of Mexico will be the federally mandated name again in no time

In general, societies progress as internal contradictions force old structures to break into new ones

Liberal democracy and capitalism uniquely satisfy these underlying social tensions

So, while such systems can sometimes backslide to older systems, they can’t progress into a “higher” system

Which, honestly, is at least a little fair! Fukuyama certainly knew what he was doing when he titled his essay and book that.

But it’s nice to see it acknowledged that it’s not literally 400 pages of “The Super Nintendo just came out, and now nothing will happen ever again”

I’m very glad this is so high up!

TEoH presents, I think, a rather weak argument for its claim (though it does somewhat compensate by saying ‘Megalothymotic’ a lot). But people really like to argue against an even sillier version of the book they imagine based on the title

Impressively coherent Skeet under the circumstances

Happy new year!

Jesus!

I’m sure someone got haunted three times by the ghost of Roger Moore that Christmas Eve

It takes quite a brutal mind to retaliate against a kind action.

So sorry to hear that happened

*well, his view of “nihilism” broadly is a little murkier. It’s a little like: old value system thrives (Christendom) -> values rejected, system remains (nihilism) -> value system transcended

That goal is usually depicted as the creation of a new paradigm, but might itself be a flavour of nihilism
December 23, 2024 at 8:58 PM
Though funnily enough, Nietzsche himself despised “nihilism” as he understood it, which was roughly like that first definition

Nihilism is just a super fuzzy term that - fittingly enough - is often hard to make meaningful!

He fulfills all the big conspiracy-theory tropes too: manipulates data, spreads propaganda, harms kids…

But conspiracists love to shadowbox with the nebulous enemies they make up, yet will clasp hands a man who literally, provably conspires against them to enrich himself.

You’d think it’d be difficult to sell yourself as “anti-establishment” if you have your name written on several skyscrapers, but I guess that’s balanced out by buddying up with a Kennedy, a smorgasbord of C-suiters and TV personalities, and the wealthiest man in the world

Neoliberalism is when you wear short skirts, not T-shirts.

When you’re Cheer Captain, and not in the bleachers.
