We used to believe in one person, one vote in this country. Now a billionaire from South Africa, who was allowed to pour $277 million into the election thanks to the Roberts court, is apparently calling the shots and this isn’t causing widespread outrage.

I guess I made the list!

I'm flattered Valley So Low is included among so many stellar releases this year.

The tragedy of TVA is that it was far too slow in weaning itself off coal—partly because its ambitious nuclear program was stymied by some near-disasters in the 1970s, leaving it heavily reliant on fossil fuels.

My book centers on TVA, the U.S.’s largest public utility and a cornerstone of the New Deal, which helped lift millions of Southerners out of poverty during the Depression. It achieved this by throwing up dozens of hydroelectric dams and coal-fired power plants—a radically ambitious feat.

In 2008, a power plant spewed a billion gallons of coal sludge over 300 acres in TN. The disaster was 100x larger than Exxon Valdez. Now more than 50 people who helped clean up the mess are dead.

I spent five years reporting on what happened, and my book, VALLEY SO LOW, is out now.

The Kingston coal-ash disaster is one of the largest environmental fiascos in U.S. history, but far too few Americans know about it. I’m ecstatic @nytimes.com reviewed my new book, VALLEY SO LOW, that tells the full story.
