"Please let me kiss you," she murmured, gazing at me like she wanted far more than that. Like she wanted everything. "Nope." I pulled back from her, breathing shallow and sharp. "Why are you suddenly horny again?" She let out a bark of laughter. "Let's see you do better with the map." It was her turn to blush. The color made her look like candy. "You mean better than circling random intersections?" I cleared my throat, clearing my head at the same time. "I was drawing bubbles." She gestured with her finger in the air, a circle, as if I didn't know what a bubble looked like. I had to force myself not to smile. Charlotte was charming, I had to give her that. And funny. And gorgeous. For a moment, our eyes met. Hers were sparkling, as usual. I leaned in, placed a kiss on her cheek before moving on. My lips were hot where they had touched her skin. She grinned at me, eyes moving to my mouth. "What was that for?" she asked in amusement. "Forget about it," I muttered, refusing to look at her. My body was filled with moths, not butterflies, so drawn to the heat of her light that part of me felt ready to risk everything. Luckily, that was not the part of me that was in charge and logically knew that Charlotte and I loathed each other, and that this softness wasn't real. "You know what I think?" Charlotte took my hand, flipping it over to trace the lines of my palm with her fingertips. I shot her a look. "I don't care," The words were breathless. Every brush of her fingers on my wrist made it harder to speak. "I think you have a little crush on me.” Snorting, I tore my eyes from hers. "You're delusional." I absolutely did not have a crush on Charlotte. "You're blushing," she teased. "Can we move on? My best friend is kind of in mortal danger and it's your fault." She opened her mouth to speak again but I cut her off.

A certain lightness entered my chest; it had been so long since I’d met another young sanguipir, and my energy started to grow again to match theirs. That was, until we entered a huge dining room with a large table that sat at least 20. Because it wasn’t empty, and because Sebastian Alexander looked over his shoulder at us with a casual smile. He looked exactly the same as he always had, annoyingly handsome, with immaculate black hair and icy blue eyes that were almost grey. When those eyes met mine, they flashed with recognition. But his smile didn’t falter, and his face betrayed no sign that he knew who I was. My blood boiled in my veins but I decided to play along. Now was not the time to make a move, not when there was a reptesian with us. Reverend was in the kitchen cutting up lettuce. Prayer skipped to join him, and Max took a seat beside me and across from Sebastian. I stared at him but he only manifested Max and I each a cup of tea. “How are you feeling?” he asked in a gentle voice. It shook slightly, giving him away. Some of my rage tapered down to a simmering satisfaction. He knew me, and I was in his head already. “I’m great!” I said brightly. “Yes, I’m well,” Max said, taking a sip of her tea. “Thank you again.” “Yes, thank you.” The words were almost painful to say to a man who was vile deep down to his bones. But he was so, so powerful. His power radiated off of him, tingling my skin every time he met my eye. I couldn’t wait to drain every bit of him into a large, luxurious bathtub. But first, I would bite him so that he felt my venom in every vein, every muscle in his body. I noticed he refused to meet my eye again, and all the hair stood up on the back of my neck.

i am so discouraged because i feel like my writing is suddenly invisible and i'm unsure of why? i guess i need to advertise more but i'm stuck on that, and i'm stuck on reading, and i'm feeling kind of panicky about it. no one has given me any feedback for windswept desire.

"Is that Angelique Hart, the good and righteous superhero of the city? Or Angelique Boudreaux, ruthless--" "You don't know anything about my past," she snapped, cutting me off. Her cheeks had gone red, and she had turned her eyes away from me, chewing her lip. I wanted her back. I wanted to drown in those eyes, because it felt so electric to run out of air when I was looking into them. "I know enough to know that this war would be ended if I called the Gathering myself," I said softly. That made her look at me again. Her face went slightly pale and she stared me down. "You wouldn't. You'd be punished right alongside me." "They will come anyway if we keep lighting fires. That's why we need to settle this." I smiled, holding her gaze. I had all but forgotten about her foot, mostly because I couldn't stop looking at her. "Settle it, how?" she asked suspiciously. I slid my hand up from her heel to her calf, digging my fingers in slightly. But I didn't want to be rough with her. What I wanted with this enemy was to touch her so tenderly she melted in my hands. "There's only one way we're going to work this out, isn't there?" My voice was low, trying to make sure she knew that I meant no harm. "I'm not having sex with you," she breathed, though she didn't sound even half-convinced. "That's not what I was going to say..." I told her honestly.

This city will belong to us, as it should." "And you will be what? A mayor?" She scoffed at that, a look of derision on her face. “You are taking a dangerous avenue to City Hall, if that’s the case.” "A leader. A real one, unlike you," I growled. "You are a traitor to your people." "By trying to keep people safe from you?" "By trying to stop this cause. Locking up my men. Holding us back. The fighting. Shifter versus charmer. We should be working together." For a moment, I considered that. Working side by side with this woman. Just the idea of it gave me a splitting headache. "I will never work with you. I will never have anything to do with you. I'm going to stop you." The words were a snarl. "I'm going to kill you for this.” Her lip was curled, nostrils flared. Her jaw was clenched. I had never seen so much rage in one person. "I swear." She spat the words out like bullets to my chest. "The ropes will untie in a half hour. You should go home. You look tired." My voice was dull, flat. Suddenly, I was exhausted of being in the same room as this woman. "Go fu--" "You should probably be respectful, unless you want to be tied down longer," I chided. "Are you here to kill me again?" I asked before I even opened my eyes. My heart pounded steadily as I waited in the dark, holding my breath. I could sense that Angelique stood near my bed without speaking. Her voice was a whisper when she spoke. "No.” I finally dared open my eyes to look up at her, eyes puffy, hair in wild curls all over her head. Her bottom lip was between her teeth as she looked down at me. “Oh," I said, grabbing her by the hips and rolling her over, about to take her mouth with mine without even hesitating. She actually giggled and beat me on my back. “Not this, you swine." The words were affectionate, exasperated in a way I had never heard from her. It made me wonder if there was hope that she would soften and melt for me. And that made me wonder what the hell kind of insanity I had let fall over my entire body, from head to toe. "Oh, sorry," I said with a grin, pulling back from her. I was surprised when she remained in my bed, though she scooted as far away as possible. I propped myself up on my elbow. “So, what’s up?” She looked down at me, shyness suddenly all over her features. "I had a nightmare about the mimick.” I could tell by the way she spoke that she begrudged herself even that small amount of openness with me, but I was glad she had. "I'm not surprised. They're creepy," I replied. I reached for her, but she shrank away. Her eyes were on my lips, though, as she sank into my bed. It wasn't quite large enough for us to avoid touching entirely; the feeling of her knee against mine was enough to send my mind reeling. I straightened up, lingering on the edge of the cot.

"When you came over that night, was it really to yell at me?" She paused, chewing her lip as her cheeks flushed cherry red. "No. I thought--I mean--" “Go on," I commanded her before I could stop myself. She lifted a challenging eyebrow and I smiled. That was my Angelique. She paused, then sighed. "I thought... If we had sex..." The last word sounded like ecstasy on her tongue. I lowered my face to place a kiss softly on her lips, fingers tracing up her thigh. Looking at her now, no one could doubt that Angelique radiated love and devotion. "Yes." But there was a slight smile on her face. "Always." "Good. I hate you, too."

“I want to go in,” I told them, unable to ignore the rumbling in my stomach. Vita shook her head. “We need to get going.” Her hands were on her hips, head tilted to the side. Her eyes were narrowed and her lips were pursed with disapproval. “I’m not going into that forest before I get something to eat. Not all of us can sustain ourselves on blood.” “That’s what your flesh is for.” For an instant, a beaming smile came over her lips. Then it dropped, and she glared at me, licking her teeth. “We’re not stopping.” I shrugged, turning toward the diner. My heart pounded in my chest knowing she was stewing behind me, and that she was capable of anything. She could tear me apart with those teeth alone, not to mention her venom, and though her blood manipulation abilities were likely weak, she could still make me bleed out with a snap of her fingers. Instead, she caught up with me, walking beside me. She looked up at my face with a scowl. “Aren’t you hungry?” I asked, nudging her with my elbow. I only hoped it didn’t piss her off. A soft sigh of relief escaped my lips when her face broke into a wicked grin. “I don’t want to eat pancakes. I want to eat you.” I shrugged. “I won’t stop you.” “Why not?” Her eyebrows lifted in surprise as her eyes ran up and down my body. I studied her in amusement for a moment as she licked her lips. “Being eaten by a beautiful woman? I can’t think of a better way to go.” “You think I’m beautiful, huh?” she teased. I cast her a small smile, but didn’t answer. I needed to stop thinking about how beautiful she was, not dive into it headfirst. But she took my hand in hers, swinging our arms, her mood completely changed. When she linked our fingers, my breath caught in my chest. I yanked my hand away and she frowned at me.

Sam sighed. "Fine. Show me the picture. But we're going stealth. No way I'm letting Thana know I'm there." As he spoke, there was a glint in his eye that I didn't like. I didn't know what it meant, but I knew it was nothing good. "Now, wait--this isn't smart, Angelique. There's a reason she let you see Nani be carried off. She's baiting us," I told her, trying not to let pleading come through in my voice. In my gut, I knew it was the wrong choice. "For what? She had us. She left us behind," Angelique pointed out. She glared at me intently, trying to blast me to smithereens with her eyes for daring to question her plan, or breathe in her direction. "She had us in the forest where I had control of everything. Not in the city where those powers are limited without harming a whole lot of people," I said, feeling heat prickle at the back of my neck. It seemed like each time I tried to reason with Angelique was more frustrating than the last. "This isn't the jungle." "Will you two please stop? You're giving me a hernia.” Sam’s voice was poisonous, and he rubbed his stomach as if he was trying to hold his guts in. "Shut up," Angelique snarled, then paused, seething at me. She pointed her finger at me, jabbing me in the chest. "If something happens to Nani, I'm making you pay for it." When she finally conceded, I managed to relax, but only slightly. "Pay for it how?" I asked in amusement, unable to help myself. "Before this gets soggy, I'd like to continue about my day. Sebastian was supposed to come over last night and nothing. I waited all night in nothing but my--" Sam chattered on. Shaking my head, I ignored him. He cut himself off when he realized he didn't have an audience, scowling and turning back to the portal. “Just give the girl a pack, Charlie. And tell her to stop being rude," he said dismissively, sweeping through the portal.

One perfectly manicured eyebrow shot right up in a look of disapproval. "Charlotte Sofia Barlowe," he said in a sharp voice. "You have been on our radar for years as a dangerous vigilante." “So?" I challenged. He shook his head, crossing his arms over his chest. I could see where he made a formidable leader, but that didn't mean he wasn't also my goofy cousin, and I wasn't scared of him. "So, I can't keep covering for you. We were here for Angelique. It wasn't until--" "Wait, you're here for Angelique?" I asked, something sinking in my chest. I couldn't quite put my finger on what it was. This was a good thing. If they knew who she was, she wouldn't be coming back to the city. She would be banished, or worse. The thought made me swallow hard. "Yes. Your shenanigans finally placed her in the city," Sebastian said. “Her shenanigans. The fires, you mean?" I asked. “Yes, the fires. And the things that prompted them.” Sebastian spoke firmly. “Neither of you is innocent in this. Especially after today. Charlie, what were you thinking?” "You know how the humans have been treating the magickals, especially in America. You know how bad it is in this city, and many others. And yet the Gathering is spending time going after a woman who has been dormant for decades." The words came out before I could think about them, and I wondered why. "She hasn't even--" I cut myself off, knowing I was digging a hole that I would never be able to climb out of if I just didn't shut up. "Oh, now you're defending Angelique?" he asked, both eyebrows raised. "I'm not. I'm just saying. Priorities. The Gathering is going after their own people rather than punishing the humans for their behavior."

I had no choice; I shifted back to human as I reached for the crying child, wrapping him tightly in my arms even as I grabbed the gun. His mother screamed. So did he. I didn’t care. I cared about Vita bleeding out behind me. “I won’t hurt him unless I have to,” I told her, holding the gun to the child’s head. “Everyone leave. Now. You—” I addressed his mother again, who sobbed desperately. I felt for her. My heart fluttered erratically in my chest, and nausea churned in my stomach. “Make sure they scatter. I will return your child to you once everyone is gone and we are allowed to leave here.” The mother shot me a scathing look that I felt down to my bones. But this is what I did. Anything to get the job done. In this case, the job was to keep Vita alive. I couldn’t tell whether she was or wasn’t. She made no noises behind me. The thought made all the hair on my body rise on end. “Go,” I snapped at the woman. She visibly jumped at my tone before hurrying out of the diner. I watched through the window as she spoke to the others, who soon dispersed. “I’m sorry,” I said to the sobbing little boy I had been clinging to, and let him go. Then I lifted a still, lifeless Vita into my arms and began to run, flying out of the diner.

1. feverish and fervent
2. the MAIN scene that always has a gimmick
3. more romantic, but not necessarily slow and soft

I would have happily gone all day, all week, all year. But we didn’t have time. When I finally forced myself to pull back, I took her hands and placed a kiss on each one. Sitting up, I stayed beside her, looking down at her body. She was covered with sweat, which had made the hair around her face spring into unruly curls that framed her features like a halo. "Told you," I teased once she'd caught her breath. She shot me a look. There was a hint of smile on her face, and her eyes were wide and adoring. She propped herself up on her elbow, looking into my eyes, searching for something, maybe tenderness or reassurance. I wanted to give her both. "You didn't do that like you hated me," she said curiously, chewing her lip. "That's because I don't." I pressed her hair back to see her face more clearly. The way she looked at me was devastating, intoxicating. Her lids had gone low and there was a pout on her pretty lips. "It would be easier if you did," she said, almost sadly. "For who?" I lifted an eyebrow. She let out a soft laugh. “For me.” "I'm not trying to make things easy for you," I pointed out with a grin. She responded with a small smile, eyes sparkling with love and amusement that she didn’t recognize herself. "Yes, I know. You make things infinitely harder on purpose." "It's actually not always on purpose," I said. "You're right. I shouldn't have hit that guy. I was just--" "Jealous?" I noticed her hips squirming already. "Impulsive? You never think about anything before you do it." "That's not true." Parting her legs with one hand, I ran my fingers through the curls between her thighs. "I've thought about fucking you since that night we first kissed.”

After closing the portal, I paced back and forth. Desire pounded through my veins so powerfully that when I closed my eyes, all I pictured was her lips, and all I could feel was the way her hand had felt in my hair, tugging at the roots, desperate and furious. "Fuck this," I muttered. I had to go after her. I had to kiss her. Every single inch of me regretted not doing so. Telling her to take what she wanted instead of just giving it to her. What a stupid fucking thing to do when she was right there offering herself up to be tasted like a three-course meal. "No..." I said to myself. "Nope." Instead of opening the portal again, I started to turn away, to make the right decision, until I heard the portal unzip behind me anyway. The chiding in Sebastian's voice was enough. "I'm not thinking," I mumbled. "Apparently not," he said. He crossed the room to the bar and I turned to him, unable to keep from smiling. He grinned at me too, winking as he poured us each a glass of my most expensive scotch. Vita stood beside me, tense and ready to spring. I could feel the rage radiating from her, more overwhelmingly powerful than even the deadly shield Sebastian had up to repel everyone, including his friends, his family, and his mate. “You little chickenshit. We need to talk,” Abraham demanded, his eyes locked on where Breck’s body twitched on the floor. “What the fuck possessed you to do this?” “Funny how us ‘talking’ always ends with you on your knee—” “Shut the fuck up, Sebastian.” Abraham’s cheeks went flaming red and I had to look away. “Ew,” said Charlie. “What’s going on, Seb? He didn’t look at Charlie as he spoke. He looked at Vita. The way his gaze traveled over her; not like mine, out of desire, but with so much malice, made every hair on my body stand on end. “So is Ellis…” Charlie pointed out, before being kicked in the ass by her friend. She snickered. “Stop,” Abraham commanded. “I thought you were worried about your wives?” “We were, until we realized that they’re individually more powerful than we are combined, and that they are probably on the way.” Charlie shrugged. “Angelique and Lily will find a way in. You can’t stop a fire goddess from getting what she wants.” “So now, we’re just tired,” Ellis said. “Two sleepy maidens.” “If you both don’t shut up, I will cut out your tongues.” Sebastian’s warning was dead serious, hissed through his teeth.
