This is my pal trying to shoo the male off so we could get the dead one off the road. He was totally oblivious to us. If I hadn't have stopped, he'd be dead too.

That was my initial thought but there didn't seem to be any 'damage' from a car. The dead one was female.
The male wasn't trying to eat her, just pulling at her face. Took a while to get him off so I could drag the other off the road.

I'm away for a few days and I had 6 eggs in the house so I've dotted them around the garden. Pine martens or jays will take them. Badgers not bothered.

I looked at the picture before reading your post and thought "I've never seen one of those in John Muir Country Park".
