I'm confident they're showing ID at those checkpoints. They just don't feel the need to show it to the likes of us.

Abortion is illegal in many cases. Should college professors be prohibited from arguing that it should be legal?

Ben Schrader, the AUSA who had been head of the criminal division in Nashville, resigned today. I'm sure that's entirely coincidental.

Depends on your benchmark. It's still a LOT higher (like 27% across the Big seven felonies, and over 40% for felony assault) vs pre-pandemic levels.
June 2, 2025 at 9:20 PM
Depends on which crime. murder is back to pre-pandemic lows, but the "big 7" felonies are up around 27% YTD from 2019, with felony assault (which is vastly more common than murder, and does a lot to create a mood of concern around crime) up over 40%.

So, who gets to appoint the members of this board? Do the journalists at a not-for-profit magazine created by the Heritage Foundation get a vote?

Who defines what information is inaccurate, and hence will be forbidden?
May 23, 2025 at 9:10 PM
So, you'd be fine giving the Trump administration the power to forbid news organizations from "knowingly disseminat[ing] lies" like "Biden won the 2020 election," and acting as an "arm of [the Democratic] party"?

If investors think a market is attractive, they can just invest in a company already in that market. Management teams generally don't have that option.
May 15, 2025 at 2:59 PM
As a former equity analyst, I can say that investors generally prefer companies _don't_ do much diversifying, but rather "stick to their knitting". The push to expand into other markets or businesses typically comes from management teams.

Fox News isn't free, you need a cable subscription to get it.

Few publications are compelling enough and have a reader base that’s both rich enough and ad-adverse enough to justify being entirely ad-free.

Print newspapers both cost money to purchase/subscribe to, and have lots of ads. Most media has been supported by both subscription and advertising for a very long time.

The Sunday NYT hasn’t been 75c since 1977. Even thirty years ago, it was $2.50 on the newsstand, and a delivery subscription in the NY metro area was $28/month. By comparison, the full NYT All Access bundle (including games & cooking) is $25/month without any discount.

Ah, it was a .577. I remembered it was a ludicrous caliber, just not HOW ludicrous!

I can read it just fine. Is it also disrespectful to post about an event that's not in your city, or post about an article that's not in a language you speak? Of course not.

Don't disagree with the premise, but that USAID column should be taller, budget is around $40B/year (money very well spent), so around $400B over the next decade.

This is essentially "gardening leave", which is pretty typical in finance when somebody changes jobs - you're technically still employed by your prior employer for a few months, but you don't do any work or come into the office.

I don't know, if it appeared that someone had developed a way to produce any product for a tiny fraction of what it cost incumbents, the stock price of those incumbents would likely plummet.
