Rewatched Casablanca last night and found this on the apps this morning. (In the movie the line is "New York": the Nazi says "Are you one of those people who cannot imagine the Germans in their beloved Paris? ... How about New York?")

Attended a lovely tribute to Margaret Burroughs yesterday (thanks @invisible.institute ). Performances from veterans of her prison art/poetry classes, personal remembrances, and, most striking right now, a story of how she defied the 1950s loyalty oath as a Chicago public school teacher. A legend.

We all know "give me your tired, your poor, / your huddled masses yearning to breathe free."

Time to remember the beginning of the sonnet:

"Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land ..."

best find of this year's Hyde Park Used Book Sale: this "anthology of bad verse" by Wyndham Lewis, with incredibly bitchy biographies of "contributors" like Wordsworth, Tennyson, Emerson, Poetry, and even Keats

The other side of this coin is when enough time passes that everybody imagines these people living "around the same time"

An incredibly touchy subject around here, and the Triibe is one of the few outlets that can properly frame it.

Broadview today. Illinois State Police keep the crowd from interacting with ICE, brandishing pepperball guns.

@govpritzker.illinois.gov , why are you okay with this?

Same question to Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart, who also had officers there.

Is it significant, one wonders, that the ships he's criticizing are the stealth dealies that look like Cybertrucks of the waves?

Am I the only one who doesn't watch late night TV but does remember Kimmel fondly from *Win Ben Stein's Money*? I can't believe the fash came after the smarmy smart guy's performatively dumb sidekick.
