Come join me at DIESEL in Brentwood next Tuesday, Oct. 21st, where I'll be in conversation with best-selling author Lucinda Berry about her new audio book THIS IS A SAFE SPACE, which I devoured as fast as humanly possible once I downloaded it to my phone.

Could not be prouder of my members today.

When we fight. We win.

Your move @latimes.com

Hate that it has come to this, but the @latimes.com has left its staff hanging with years of bad faith bargaining.

I’d much rather be focused on doing critical reporting for you all in times like these, but since The Times can’t get serious at the table, I’m voting yes.

Happy belated birthday to @blacktopkid.bsky.social — a guy who has deservedly made it 10x over but remains a tireless champion of all of us up and coming crime writers. Happy to know ya Shawn, and can’t wait to tear into this one.

L.A. in a nutshell right now — people see white unmarked vehicles and men with rifles and camo and all stop and assume it’s ICE or Border Patrol (Twas neither, LASD executing a felony warrant at a NoHo flop motel, ended peacefully)

For those that are new here, I occasionally do non-journalism things. I’m also a crime fiction author, and Saturday at 6 p.m. I’ll be wearing that hat instead, helping my friend Patricia Smith launch her debut novel, REMEMBER, at The Book Jewel.

Curfew is now in effect. LAPD demanding people leave area pushing them up Temple. Someone threw a glass bottle at cops and they have fired less lethal rounds in that direction. There are some protesters stuck on Los Angeles between Temple and Aliso in front of federal building.

As faith leaders have a crowd take a knee and pray outside the federal building, DHS officers raise their weapons at priests and National Guard members lineup with riot shields against them tonight in downtown L.A.
June 11, 2025 at 2:45 AM
After several wild nights in downtown L.A., faith leaders held a rally in Grand Park calling for strong non-violent resistance to what they called “reprehensible” actions in the city by ICE and the Trump Administration. They are now holding a peaceful march toward the Metro Detention Center.

A small group of protesters has blocked the 101 South again. CHP had blocked off the exits but failed to account for a series of wholes in an adjacent chainlink fence.
June 10, 2025 at 10:55 PM
DTLA 930am — The old @latimes.com building including the famous Globe Lobby have been vandalized. There’s broken glass and rubber bullets everywhere. Spring Street being blocked with concrete barricades near City Hall where a protest in support of David Huerta is to begin at 11am

6pm:
— The great Waymo blaze can be seen from blocks away.
— DHS Police have replaced LAPD blocking Alameda near Aliso.
— LAPD is still dealing with a crowd at Temple/Alameda but it’s shrinking.
— CHP still has the 101 half closed and seems to be firing flashbacks into the air?

The protesters have turned on the Waymos

.⁦‪⁦‪@LAPDHQ‬⁩ officer just raised and aimed directly at a protester.

Nat Guard/DHS threw tear gas canisters and smoke grenades into the crowd. Protesters and media hit. Pellet rounds deployed. All to seemingly clear path for a convoy of DHS/Border Patrol vehicles. I got hit but fine after an eye rinse.
June 8, 2025 at 8:20 PM
California National Guard with riot shields pushed the protesters into the streets. Tear gas deployed and pellets exploded on the street. Didn’t see any arrests, though there was some shoving back and forth with the shields.

A closer look at pepper ball weapon carried by DHS. Despite one officer attempts to converse and de-escalate with the protesters the number of officers out here continues to grow. Protesters have done little other than curse and occasionally advance a few feet past the sidewalk.

Some scenes from the Metropolitan Detention Center in Downtown L.A.
June 8, 2025 at 7:00 PM
Whole bunch of DHS cops just showed up in the garage, armed with pepper ball guns.

The crowd has grown here a little bit but other than people moving up to the edge of the parking gate there’s been no aggression from the protesters.
