We’re picking up JQA’s line-a-day diary in December 1825, when he was nine months into his presidency, with questionable public support. On Dec. 6 he would deliver his first annual address to Congress, which called for a bold plan of national improvement.

JQA began to keep a diary at age 12 and never stopped. The result: over 15,000 pages within 51 volumes, all held by @mhs1791.bsky.social. Besides longer entries, he kept a line-a-day volume for about 33 years.

Introducing our diarist: John Quincy Adams (1767-1848) was far more than the sixth president of the US. Before his presidential term, he had practiced law, served as a senator and secretary of state, and held several diplomatic posts in Europe. After his term, he served in Congress until his death.
