Took me a bit to learn that playing ...b5 in these positions is actually the lesser evil! The c6 pawn will be backwards either way (after either you or White plays b5 - other options are worse) but playing...b5 yourself makes it harder for White to attack c6 and fixes a potential weakness on b4.
