I should clarify. The gradient _iteself_ only appears when the window is in focus. When in background, the gradient is incomplete.

Safari 18.5: It only works when the window is focused. When in the background, only the top few lines of the gradient show, the rest is white.
Same behavior for Safari Tech Preview.

I agree 1,000%. In general, I would say to never rely on hardware settings alone. For instance, I keep my Mac in dark mode, but I never want to read articles in dark mode. Always give the user a toggle to change dark/high-contrast/motion settings independent of hardware settings.

Can not agree with you more. Only got to go to 2 of these, but my gosh what an amazing few days they were. Besides getting to meet my idols/heroes, I learned so much and left so excited about the future of our profession.
