Finalists losers Germany, something you very rarely get to say about the Germans, are a country which frequently smashes their shirt design. The 1988 shirt was the best of all time, but this shirt certainly earns its stripes (boom boom). Great vintage, great design - I give this shirt a 9/10.

Netherlands were the other surprise exiteers, having won the last Euros and starring Van Basten and Bergkamp. The vivid orange screams football heritage, but the collar and brush stroke pattern give this a unique look that wins it some style points - a 7/10, great for festivals.

The hosts Sweden were the first to get knocked out in the semi-final round. The yellow and blue is another great colour palette (although blue and yellow is not), and with these colours, this collar and that panelling this shirt screams 90s. A vintage banger, I give this shirt an 8/10.

Pipping them to third was Scotland starring commentator Ally McCoist, continuing their historical tradition of not making it through to knockouts. The Scottish shirts of this era were always fantastic, and I’d argue this a genuine nice design I’d wear to a nightclub. I bequeath this shirt an 8/10.

Bottom of Group B was the Commonwealth of Independent States - the Soviet Union had qualified then fallen apart before the tournament, so their team went under this new name. The USSR typically did a great shirt, but the CIS does not - too standard. I give this shirt a 4/10 (for historicity, 10/10)

Just above them were France, starring Cantona and Deschamps. A team not at the peak of their past and yet to know the good times that would come, the shirt isn’t France’s best - but luckily for them, the French colours just look good always. The shoulder panels are very 90s. I give this shirt 7/10.

Starting with the two teams that didn’t make it through Group A, bottom of the pack was the England of Gary Lineker. The shirt was a continuation of the shirt for Italia 90, which makes sense as the trim is fantastic. As a man who loves his country and loves a fine design, I give this shirt a 9/10.
