Every author needs a beagle under their desk to aid the creative process through a combination of snorts, sighs, and generally keeping you from putting your feet in the most comfortable position.

She’s a weird little dog. Perhaps part rat as smelly, cave-like environments are her thing.

The universe definitely does not want me to write much today. A young hawk decided to give me a treat for a good minute.

It’s hard to concentrate on writing with such a pretty sunrise.

Ooof. By dint of alphabetical order, I am now in the older half of living West Point graduates.

A striking message to industry from Ukrainians at #LANDEURO is the invitation to bring new products to the war for testing. Although it makes perfect sense to pitch conflict as a comparative advantage and offers legitimate win-win possibilities, the transactional honesty is nonetheless disquieting.

It was an honor to moderate a panel with doctrine guru Rich Creed, 56th MDC commander BG Steve Carpenter, and Harald Mannheim of Airbus multi-domain operations. A hot topic these days, we had plenty to discuss. Thanks to AUSA for assembling such a great panel of experts. I learned a lot!

The ossuary at Verdun shocks. I didn’t take a picture and my wife hesitated for fear of disrespect. My brother-in-law didn’t think the bones were real at first. But it is a final act of honoring them to reflect on the 130k unknown of the 300k dead in just that battle. A place worth reflecting upon.

A surprising aspect of touring WWI AEF battlefields is the lack of other visitors, which makes for a very different experience certainly than Civil War but also even Normandy. We met no other Americans in two days, and only a handful of others. A relief in part but also adds a bit of melancholy.

Crossing the Rhine. Au revoir, France! Gutten morgen, Deutschland!

The best part of being editor in chief for @warroomeds.bsky.social is advance copies of books. I met @the-irish-texan.bsky.social several years ago in College Station and seeing this develop into an award-winning book has been great fun. Podcast to air this summer! @univpressofkansas.bsky.social

Do I get any extra credit for writing with the “help” of a beagle who insists on being under my enclosed desk? She loves confined spaces (and stank). Somehow we both fit in the space, but it does get tight.

A fun night listening to the ever entertaining Daniel Krebs talk about a serious topic of which he is a leading scholar: Hessian POWs during the American Revolution. And he threw in a great local angle.

Fascinating discussion of the functional requirements, political imperatives, and cultural influences of consolidating military conquest in medieval China, British India, and Napoleonic Europe. A great example of the power of comparative history. @milhistlee.bsky.social @amikaberidze.bsky.social

It’s too bad that gov’t travel restrictions kept @amnagel.bsky.social from panel, but still a delight to present alongside Rory McGovern at #SMH2025 panel co-sponsored by Society for Historians of Gilded Age and Progressive Era. My paper judged strategic competence of 1900s US military.

May you all be as happy as a beagle in the sun!

I’m home writing to get ready for a conference next week, when I look up to see this hawk perched on the deck next to the feeders.
That’s worth taking a break for!

The desk is definitely in full-on writing mode.

A few years ago, the oldest gave me this mug: an 1890 advertisement featuring a US Navy monitor (an obscure ship type). I love it, and it has been my daily coffee carrier ever since. But is even better today, as I am writing about the strategic choices underlying ships like this.

Hello, Monday! A pretty sunrise to start the week.

She’s just staring into the corner.

Pausing from writing to enjoy my coffee and watching all my bird friends at the feeders. Is that procrastination or enjoying life? Maybe a bit of both.

PS. Starlings are jerks.

I don't do much operational history, but for the little I do, thank god for Google Maps! What a treasure to see decent terrain depictions, some photos, and--best of all--take measurements.
