Editor at The Trace focused on creating a more inclusive model for covering gun violence at the local level, and some other things.

Before that (and always, in a sense): the education beat.

After hours: theater, music, books, art, Chaucer.
By the way, I’m in a safe zone. This is what “safe” looks like now.

I’m ok. LA is really, really not. 💔

If you're looking for a #longread, please consider Mensah Dean's Roots and Realities series @thetrace.org:

He wants to people to see that "normalizing higher-than-average gun violence in the Black community is an abnormal response, one that needs to be challenged."

Someone just reminded me that it's better here. And it is.

So I'll share that throughout this nightmare, with every new detail, I keep coming back to אֵיכָ֣ה / Lamentations.

Journo friends: if you, too, are at ONA in the lobby waiting for a room — or just hanging here — come say hi! I am very tired but very happy to see you. (And I swear I’m smiling under this mask).

There’s no one like Regina Spektor, who performed beautifully at The Greek last night. Just her with a Steinway and keyboard. Percussing into the mic, with her a drumstick, or hand on a bench.

To psych herself up, she told herself that the venue was just someone’s beautifully landscaped backyard.

A glassblowing studio, with its hard edges, hot surfaces and industrial feel, might seem an unlikely place for healing. But Project Fire uses art therapy to help gun violence survivors overcome trauma.

Lily Gaga is clinging to me because daytime fireworks have already started in LA. Fourth of July, decidedly not a Caturday.

Are we foodcasting like it’s 2012?

Yesterday’s spread from a catch-up brunch, featuring Samin Nosrat’s citrus salmon, kale tahini Caesar, Jake Cohen’s shakshuka a la vodka, grilled cheese-lets, cold brew, and, in honor of Levain’s arrival in LA, my imitation of the world’s most famous cookie.
