Hey friends, bad news. I am extremely disappointed that I am not able to sit down with @debbiegibson tonight to talk about her memoir. I've been looking forward to this for months, but I'm in no condition to be on stage or in public, because after being so careful for so long, I let my guard down at Rose City comic con last weekend, and I caught Covid for the first time. Wow covid sucks. It sucks so much. Do whatever you can to prevent yourself from catching it. I'm so annoyed, because it was so avoidable, and I'm extra pissed at myself for allowing the people who never stopped complaining about my choice to continue masking, to influence my decisions about my health and my family's health. Never again. To everyone who was looking forward to seeing us chat tonight, I'm so sorry that I can't be there. Knowing Debbie like I do, though, I know that she's going to give you a magical show. Stay healthy, everyone.

This is what I want to explain to others when they ask or wonder why the mask, still.

I hide my chronic issues fairly okay. There are many days where I’m in awful pain, going about my day. I’m trying to limit my risk of long covid.
It's why many of us are still wearing masks. We don't love masking. It's not fun for us. We aren't trying to make some political statement. We just need to avoid getting sick because we know it'll destroy our baseline. There's a ton of overlap between the Covid Cautious and Chronic Illness communities because people living with chronic illness don't have the luxury of ignoring the ongoing pandemic. They know what a Covid infection will do to their precarious health, so when the rest of the world decided to bury their heads in the sand and rush 'back to normal', we got left behind. Stuck bearing the burden of knowing that the pandemic isn't over. That every day people are dying or becoming disabled. That each Covid infection is playing Russian Roulette with disability and eventually, your number will be up.

There was something in my face that other people deciphered as a thing displaced from its origin, like I was some kind of alien or exotic fruit. "What are you, then?" was the last thing I wanted to be asked at twelve because it established that I stuck out, that I was unrecognizable, that I didn't belong.
