Dunn’s Bridge. Built 1904 for JD Dunn to farm his land on both sides of the recently channelized Kankakee.

I also found it interesting that coming up through Tefft, they paved over the former Kankakee Belt Route crossing rather than re-grading the road.

This was also a KKK hotspot.

1. Hobart needs to actually mark the bike trail. I get lost there every time.
2. I got stopped by a parade in Hobart.
3. I do think it’s actually a nice place.

The CF&E had a derailment in Valpo on the ex-Pennsylvania Railroad line. I’m shocked given how immaculate these rails and ties look. Not a ton of maintenance happening.

The Popcorn Fest is this weekend. In the early 80s Amtrak would run a special train from Chicago to this.

Abandoned Samuelson Road (450W) bridge. Samuelson once crossed US-20 and ended at US-12. I-94 cut it off in the early 70s and the 12/212 ramps to the port finished this section off. The bridge is part of the national park. You can access this via the Marquette Greenway just east of the Ameriplex.

Ex-Pennsylvania Railroad station in Plymouth, Indiana. Located near the diamond with the Lake Erie & Western. Could be revamped for Chicago to Fort Wayne service or Michigan City to Plymouth service on the South Shore Freight and Elkhart and Western tracks.

In Wanatah, Ind, the Monon tracks have long since been pulled up, but the site is commemorated where Abraham Lincoln’s funeral train passed through. The Pennsylvania Railroad tracks still exist. The ex-Monon ROW may become a bike trail in the future.

South Bend and Rockford American Airlines airport buses to O’Hare. Check baggage, do TSA checks at the smaller airports and then transfer via coach to ORD. This is certainly better environmentally than United’s flight SBN to ORD. Easier and faster than South Shore to Blue Line.

What year would you say this home with the turret was built in? 1894? No, 1984. Yes, the same year Van Halen released Jump and the Cubs won the NL East.

The exterior was repainted since it was last listed and on Zillow.

tiktok removed the ability to post live photos to replace it with their “ai alive” and now has shoved a garbage bot you can’t delete into the platform. i root for many things to fail, and ai is certainly high upon that list.

Porter Beach park-n-ride using the ex-water parks lots and the proposed Orchard Trail extension. Eventual trails to Valpo and a shuttle there would help too. See alt for more. I feel like another park-n-ride off I-94 would help. Or a Bike NWI share program with docks and bikes at every SSL station.

Westchester-Liberty Trail extension between 50E and 100E on 1100N in Chesterton. This is much needed as it’s a busy road and people try to walk or bike down it. The next extension will safely allow you to reach Coffee Creek Preserve.

oh we are soooo close to figuring out car dependency sucks. then they’ll tell you how bike lanes will cause traffic and they need that 20,000 square foot lot for their property.
