I wanted a project where it made sense to build almost everything from scratch partially for learning purposes, but also because the zig package system is still underdeveloped in my opinion. I have not been able to properly install a single third-party package to a zig project.

Firstly, I wanted to see if I could make a solution that was freaking fast. I believe Zig will make that a lot easier than Go. I've also been looking for a fairly sizable project to get a lot of practice with Zig. At the same time, I'm learning a thing or two about implementing standards

@mcuban.bsky.social has even said he’s willing to invest into an alternative to TikTok built on ATProtocol. I’m hoping that inspires someone to build just that. Hell, I might have to give it a shot!

All that’s to say I hope whatever app truly replaces TikTok will be part of the Fediverse

On the other hand, when it comes to building alternative platforms for speech, where users share in its ownership and control rather than governments or big tech, @atproto.com and @bsky.app show that it can be done it can achieve mass adoption.

I have to say Red Note is the closest to TikTok’s quality that I’ve seen. I only wish it had better English language support. It ultimately doesn’t matter though because Red Note surely will face the same ban as TikTok given that it would surely appear to be an even greater national security threat

Most competitor’s platforms are just not native to the medium of short form video and something will always feel off about that to me. The platforms that are native to the medium are pretty rough right now
