I’d argue that this is an emotional moral response, just like the prior uproars about wall/newsfeed, Cambridge, Insta move to ads & reels, pivot to/away from videos, metaverse, ad tracking et al. They don’t care about being wrong. Nor do they care about a vision.They are ruthless about survival.

I am sure there are smarter minds than me who have compiled their research (would appreciate insights here). But after twenty years and multiple generations, I have to pose this question in a personal level. how can I square the tools I enjoy using against the real harms that their company poses?

By virtue of its existence, did it create more or less value to the world? How do we measure it? Genocides vs community vs creator and small businesses vs social movements vs the everyday connections between friends and family — and news and misinformation. How do we measure systematically?

Any suffering they cause now is outweighed by their historical influence. The problem is, Growth can’t last forever. External costs, resources constraints poses natural limits. FB has made many people rich and reshaped society. What is the net impact, after 20 years?

Zuck is a student of the Roman Empire. I honestly think he sees Meta as that - the modern Empire. The nexus of power. And Rome, in all of its influence, had an end. He will do whatever it takes to make Meta last. And he and people like him view history in the long lens.
