Americans have trusted local media more than national since the mid-1990s.

We show that roughly *half* of that is due to the "local trust heuristic" - people trust news that seems local, whether real or fake.

When Americans stop reading the local newspaper, their faith that elections are fair drops significantly.

BUT: other election attitudes, belief in American system of government unaffected

We also show that voter contact is higher in areas with multiple campaign offices, showing that these offices are active and that competition increases contact - particularly in-person and over the phone. (6/x)

Democrats opened offices in safe Dem areas, while Republicans - constrained by geography, since their core areas are less densely populated - went after swing counties more frequently. (5/x)

Within cities, the seeds of Trump 2024's successes in urban areas - and the Democrats' shift to the suburbs - can be seen in some earlier elections, particularly in these metropolitan maps of Las Vegas, Miami, Milwaukee, and Philadelphia. (4/x)

As battleground state strategies shifted, so did field office investments in these states. Florida, Ohio, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania show how political strategies and coalitions changed from 2012-2020. (3/x)

We show the partisan back-and-forth of organizing strategies, from Obama's dominant ground game in 2008 and 2012 to Trump's resurgent 2020 operation while Biden opened no offices (due to covid-19). One trend is clear - hundreds fewer Dem. offices than each prior election. (2/x)
