I like the defined structure of classic tokusatsu shows like Ultraman (1966) and the easy-to-follow but very imaginative rules. Directors like Akio Jissoji could play around with their episodes in very artistic ways without straying too far from the format.

The initial inspiration for Sunset Card Battler came when I started watching the 1993 Gridman last year. I've always loved tokusatsu, but this was the first time it hit me that I could try writing something in the genre, with our own trio of relatable teenage protagonists. (Art by Cassio Ribeiro)
