Finished Grossman's Stalingrad and one of the strangest and most memorable aspects of the ending is a woman fighting on the front who receives a care package including silk stockings from American women. Was this a thing? (p. 893 NYRB edition)

Slowly making my way through Vasily Grossman's Stalingrad. He's much more of a believer in the Soviet project compared w/ Life and Fate and his elaboration of Soviet ideology is fascinating, esp. the emphasis on individual liberty. By the next book, he is making a similar critique of Stalinism
