#1 - Anora

Sean Baker graces us with his most loveable down-and-outer yet in the form of the captivatingly brilliant Mikey Madison. But honestly, the whole cast, many of whom are relative unknowns, are phenomenal. Not many three act films get better with each act but this isn’t just any film.

#2 - The Substance

If Requiem for a Dream and Botched had a baby. Daringly directed to portray the very real horror that is cosmetic surgery, and an ever-festering addiction to beauty and youth. Sure, this isn’t subtle at all, but why does it need to be?

#3 - The Brutalist

“It’s not the journey, it’s the destination.” A poignant, if not slightly ironic quote for a film that’s three and a half hours long. Runtime aside, this is hard to fault at all. Directing. ✅ Acting. ✅ Visuals. ✅ Audio. ✅

#4 - Wicked

This defies all odds, and gravity, by perfectly adapting one of the most beloved stage musicals…or at least half of it. Ari is magical and Cynthia Erivo is MAGICAL. I’m optimistic about Part 2 and hope they’re able to top this (almost as much as I hope I’m able to top Jonathan Bailey).

#5 - Nickel Boys

Peep Show but make it a story of racist abuse based on horrifying true events. From its dual first-person narrative to the use of archival footage to actually tell parts of the story, this does things that I haven’t seen in film before.

#6 - Conclave

12 Angry Popes. I have no idea how realistic a depiction of the papal election process this is, but if it is then it explains a lot about the Catholic Church. Needs less Fiennes and more Rossellini.

#7 - I'm Still Here

If you’re looking for a Brazilian history lesson, this is not it. But if you’re looking to watch, unquestionably, the most heartbreaking performance of this awards season, then look no further than the astounding Fernanda Torres.

#8 - Dune: Part Two

Why did the sand worm cross the dune? The answer is: I have absolutely no idea because this story is a convoluted mess.
Yes it looks amazing and yes it sounds amazing, but I was confused for pretty much the entirety of the second instalment of this…trilogy?

#9 - A Complete Unknown

As someone with a pre-existing aversion to Bob Dylan and an increasing aversion to Timothee Chalamet, this film just isn’t for me and only made me dislike both more.

#10 - Emilia Perez

The worst musical I have ever seen...and I’ve seen Grease 2. This film is getting a lot of hate online and whilst not all of it is completely warranted, most of it is.
