Project TamTam between New Caledonia and Vanuatu is the world’s first SMART project. The environmental sensors will combat climate change, protecting our ocean ecosystems and marine wildlife, as well as save the lives of vulnerable people groups through advanced tsunami warnings.

Healthier oceans improve all aspects of the blue economy, and with SMART Cables, emergency teams will be able to reduce physical and economic damage from disasters, but most importantly – save lives by giving people the time to safely evacuate.

Pacific Peering is working to bring SMART Cables to American shores, and we’re championing the adoption of regulatory frameworks for SMART technology. Thank you to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy for being open to the idea of SMART Cables.

Pacific Peering is leading the SMART development on the Far North Fiber, a SMART Cable through the Northwest Passage along the Arctic Circle, connecting Japan, Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Norway, Finland, and Ireland.

Pacific Peering’s SMART Cable projects will save hundreds of thousands of lives and empower environmental protection efforts. These sensors will extend tsunami warnings by multiple hours, giving people time to evacuate.

Science Monitoring and Reliable Telecommunications (SMART) cables are ocean data cables that have been upgraded with environmental sensors. These sensors will measure ocean temperatures, sea-level pressure, and seismic movement - the underwater earthquakes that cause tsunamis
