This is such an exciting project! It's already a pretty cool venue, but with some TLC it could be a really unique space (and hopefully more a draw on non-event days).

And I certainly hope the designers include removal of the Marquam Bridge to bring back the beautiful Hood view. ;)

Totally get wanting maintenance over capital in a broad sense. And that's a big and wicked problem about funding balkanization.

In this case, in our modern era with smart phones, I think a sign that reinforces community identity and priorities is more useful than a sign for navigational purposes.

Looking good at NE 7th and Knott!

Like, these were so cool! Do we still do stuff like this with new greenways?
January 27, 2026 at 9:34 PM
I am a little skeptical of the "bike together" and "civic conversation" ideas, but I've long thought improvements to existing greenways is a great strategy: greenways should be the prettiest, most celebrated, and highly desired streets in our city.

Certainly there is still work to be done, particularly downtown. But I do agree that generally speaking its pretty amazing how much of the city (East of the West Hills and West of 82nd) can be biked on quiet, beautiful neighborhood streets. I do agree with trying to promote and celebrate that more.

When you've got building improvements like these, I guess all you can do is lean in! Heck, these are probably almost eligible for historic designation ;)

hard agree. Things like this, sooo exciting! Fingers extra crossed that they can make all this stuff come to fruition.

oh forgot one of my favs, the Snohetta Willamette Falls Riverwalk! Those were great.

These are beautiful but whats the purpose of these? A pre-proposal? Other permitting? Fundraising?

If there is one thing Portland is great at its amazing renderings - Broadway Corridor, Diamond Project, Zidell Yards, OMSI District, Green Loop. Would LOVE this. Also trying to manage expectations.

It seems like a sliding scale based on biz income would make a lot of sense.

Excited to see that building finally getting some love, its such a great building!

This is an absolutely amazing site and would immediately be one of Portland's most iconic natural gems. But an opening date of 2032?? That's 36 years(!) from purchase date to park. That is absurd. They really, really need to Abundance-ify this project and get it open!

with the continued trends of commercial shopping (i.e. ever more online) I think its probably safe to say we have plenty of existing retail capacity for the foreseeable future. I think it would behoove us to get rid of any ground floor commercial requirements at this point.
October 15, 2025 at 8:48 PM
Ah gotcha. Online discourse can be harsh. Luckily I do think the property values, generally successful commercial spaces, and interest in continued development suggest there is indeed a healthy amount of appreciation for Slabtown, but ya, not everyone's cup of tea, which is fine.
October 15, 2025 at 8:43 PM
Do you think there is opposition to Slabtown? I think it's generally well received. IMO you don't see it a lot cuz our more corridor-based, established hoods don't lend themselves to this. Or where it is feasible, you can't command high enough rents for it to pan out - at Gateway would be amazing!
October 15, 2025 at 7:18 PM
What is the block they are planning to build on? Also love the language of the Slabtown neighborhood itself as an "amenity"
October 15, 2025 at 7:15 PM
I didn’t realize they had moved the Tabor Raves down there.

Correct, a very popular local hike. And to be clear, this is entirely satirical and not an actual fox news image.

I always assumed it was Forest Park.
September 29, 2025 at 5:13 AM
Wow, thank you and congrats, sounds like a very cool direction for the site (dare I say a Portland institution)! Won't be able to make Tuesday but will stay tuned in for sure!
September 25, 2025 at 9:32 PM
Can anyone confirm that indeed construction has started on both of these?
September 22, 2025 at 6:32 PM
Seems pretty on point for Portland, not exactly the epicenter of sports culture. My child's teacher always refers to playing "ball pass" which presumably means catch.
September 10, 2025 at 12:49 AM
+1 to that! Another potential investigation: New retail construction on Williams. Seems like a lot for a spec project, so wondering if there is a tenant behind it all (new restaurant?).

What always strikes me about PDX is just how much of the atrium area is public space - before security. It’s fairly unique in an airport, these days, no?
