She was the first socialist to win a citywide election in Seattle since Anna Louise Strong was elected to the school board in 1916. Sawant has indicated that the genesis of her becoming a socialist began in India, a country plagued by immense poverty.

A former software engineer, Sawant became an economics instructor in Seattle after immigrating to the United States from her native India. She ran unsuccessfully for the Washington House of Representatives in 2012 before winning her seat on the Seattle City Council in 2013.

🗃️ Socialist of the Day: Michael Payne is a Virginia politician currently serving on the Charlottesville City Council. He is a member of the DSA and has served since 2020. Payne graduated with a BA from William and Mary and focuses on affordable housing, public transportation and a living wage.

Garza ran on a platform of ending prosecutions for low-level drug possession, holding police officers accountable for misconduct, and pursuing restorative justice. While the executive director the Workers Defense Project, he worked to pass paid sick-time policies in Austin, Dallas, and San Antonio.

Garza was the executive director of the Workers Defense Project. He defeated incumbent DA Margaret Moore in for the Democratic Party nomination. Garza advocated for significant changes to drug prosecutions, "On day one, we will end the prosecution of low-level drug offenses here in Travis County."

🗃️ Socialist of the Day: Jose Garza is the District Attorney for Travis County, Texas. Garza was born in Lared, and grew up in San Antonio. He graduated from University of Texas in 2001 and later graduated with a J.D. from Catholic University in Washington, D.C. He is a member of the DSA.

🗃️ Socialist of the Day: Teri Castillo is a Texas politician currently serving on the San Antonio City Council. Castillo is a member of the DSA and has served in her capacity since 2021. She is the daughter of migrant farm workers and holds a MA in History from the University of Texas-San Antonio.

Casar was elected to the House of Reps in 2022. He’s is currently the chair of the Progressive Caucus. He announced in August that he would not seek re-election as a result of the new congressional districts proposed by the Texas legislature.

As an Austin City Council member, he led policy efforts on issues ranging from affordable housing, paid sick leave, living wage increases, tenant organizing, immigrant rights, criminal justice reforms (such as "ban the box"), and police accountability.

Casar began his activism in college, organizing with Students and Workers United for a Living Wage, which led the campaign to get University administration to pay all of its workers a higher living wage and higher tuition and fees for students to help offset the pay raises.

Amelia was born in eastern Kentucky and moved with her family to Knoxville in the early ‘80s. Amelia attended the University of Tennessee (Knoxville) and graduated with a B.A. in Comparative Studies of Race and Ethnicity, a degree she designed through the College Scholars program.

Singh has served as a community advocate for more than two decades, working in the field of medical social services, where she assisted women with access to healthcare. She worked with the Knox County Health Dept, focusing on access to medical care for Knoxville’s homeless population with HIV/AIDS.

Singh was born in Varanasi, India and moved with her family to Knoxville at the age of 10. She became a Naturalized American Citizen in Knoxville at age 13. After graduating from Bearden High School, Seema obtained a B.A. from UTK in Psychology and Religious studies.
