In case you missed it over the weekend: One “crucial link” in Utah’s Black history is up for national recognition — and revitalization. From me.
Nettie Gregory spent decades fundraising and laboring for a community center in Salt Lake City that was open to Black residents. She died shortly before the center named after her finally opened its doors.
They fled the Klan and built SLC’s first community center for Black residents. Now, organizers want to recognize them — and save the center.
A west-side community center once the only such recreational space fully open to Black Salt Lake City residents is up for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places.
