I think people overcomplicate what biogas is and how it works. As long as you follow some very basic physics and use good ventilation without pressurizing the gas a lot, it's an extremely accessible energy source that literally takes unwanted waste and turns it into energy.

When used alongside a battery system to store excess electricity as gas, it significantly extends an electricity budget. The system allows for a family to run a generator for a few hours on one of those rubber tires, enough to charge some batteries and run some appliances.

Provided you have enough gas containers, gas bags (no you can't use me, sorry), or gas holes (heh), and you don't like, put a bunch of over pressurized explosive gas in your basement or something crazy, it's super safe to use. A few standard plumbing tricks are all you need.

Most importantly, it makes significant energy + storage at small scale for heating or electricity generation with a relatively clean fuel feasible. The only other game in town is lithium ion batteries, they are definitely more convenient but very expensive for their capacity.
January 21, 2025 at 10:47 PM
The systems are very simple to engineer, things only get complicated if you need to start adding pressure and extra features. it's a very scalable system that adapts to a wide variety of needs, from basic cooking gas to generator power with minimal investment.

The standard filters are:

Water to dissolve some CO2
Steel Wool to react with Hydrogen Sulfide
Desiccant to remove water

all of these are reasonably cheap and widely available, although industrial solutions are much stronger and long lasting.

impurities and get enough pressure to account for the low fuel density, with a little tweaking any generator that can run on natural gas can run on biogas. Everyone has different opinions on the specifics:

If all you need is some heat for cooking or staying warm, you're done! The system will generate it's own pressure over time. it will take about a month to get the whole cycle going at full speed. Overfeeding is worse than underfeeding, it's basically a giant organism.

Keeping the digester warm is also very useful. underground and heavily insulated with spray foam is ideal, or in a greenhouse. it does have a lot of thermal mass which helps but 35C is optimal, think stomach temperature, also paint it black. Godspeed to this Finnish guy.
January 21, 2025 at 10:47 PM
Tire tubes are a cheaper alternative and quite durable, also more portable. No need to build a fancy frame, just put an overpressure valve at like 1/4 or 1/2 the rated PSI) to prevent a giant tube of explosive gas from popping. Or keep a REAL good eye on it like this Indian guy.
January 21, 2025 at 10:47 PM
Many people use a floating barrel storage system, this is a barrel or pipe of a larger diameter with water with a smaller diameter container which will gradually rise as it fills with gas. Usually there is a frame to keep it from falling. Weight pressurizes the storage system.
January 21, 2025 at 10:47 PM
But, this technology scales reasonably well, it's just a big airtight stomach:

Food scraps or manure slurry go in green pipe
Excess water called effluent (liquid plant fertilizer) come out brown pipe
methane and CO2 come out of blue pipe.
January 21, 2025 at 10:47 PM
Cities and Farmers have been using this technology for a long time. Anaerobic bacteria are a good waste management tool and also generate power, although big systems like this are expensive and complicated, with exponentially more pressure and explosive methane gas involved.

What is biogas? Good question imaginary person. Biogas is the product of bacteria breaking down organic matter without oxygen. If we take away the oxygen, crazy stuff happens and at the end of it we get mainly methane and CO2 and a tiny bit of hydrogen sulfide and water.

Hi, I'm Joseph Thomason. You may remember me from such rants as: "Wood, The Other Petroleum," "Building with Drone-Proof Superdirt," and "Sawdustcrete, Best Crete?"

Today, I'm here to talk to you about the circle of life, where we all break back down into an acidic sludge. 🫠

Farting on Putin: Biogas for Home Energy Storage and Generation

Recently, I read an article about how Ukrainian farmers are converting their unusable food stock into biogas, and that got me thinking...
