Imagine that we had no word for cancer and no recognition of the varieties of ways it manifests, so that we just had occasional lurid news stories about strange and sometimes fatal growths in various parts of various people, not connecting the versions in brains to the versions in prostates and breasts. If we didn’t recognize the common denominators, we couldn’t develop diagnoses and treatments or address root causes. Feminism has in fact offered a diagnosis, steadily, for decades and centuries: that the cause is misogyny and the violence is intended to perpetrate the inequality, exploitation and subordination of women. But the one-case stories avoid this recognition by treating something ubiquitous as exceptional and isolated.

I feel like solving the problem of a murderous cop gang maybe requires more than asking them not to flash gang signs.
The allegations in the lawsuit filed by his ex assert that Tanner openly referred to the Rattlesnakes as his gang, claimed that Rattlesnakes members intimidate other deputies, made false arrests, and framed people for crimes they did not commit. The suit also alleges that members would withhold backup on other deputies’ patrol calls “to endanger their lives,” wrote false police reports, and engaged in other “illegal conduct” – all reported hallmarks of deputy gangs. The US Department of Justice raised concerns about the Rattlesnakes in 2013 in a report resulting from a federal probe into allegations of racist policing. At the time, LASD pledged to stop personnel from displaying the gang’s insignia: a skull wearing a cowboy hat encircled by a Rattlesnake.
