Has AI killed the faceless YouTube channel?

I’ve always quickly clicked off any AI-generated videos I stumble upon, but now I’m noticing I don’t get recommended any videos where the human speaker is never onscreen (even ones I’m subscribed to that aren’t bad). Coincidence?

A lot of debate about WHY AI can’t / won’t/ shouldn’t replace human artists.

‘Because it sucks’ is a very easy, rational argument which will last a few months.

‘Because it hinders organic expression and connection’ should be rationale enough, and will be even more true in 10 years.

Decided to hike in Strathcona and my girlfriend’got the flu 1200 meters up and 10km into the backcountry. Finally got home to discover a cat had pissed IN not 1 but 4 hard drives of current film projects. So how’s your long weekend going?

I’d rather buy and watch dozens of discounted Blu Rays loaded with special features than drop hundreds on a new 4K player only to feel the need to spend $50 a pop for movies I already own. But I guess that’s why I still own VHS.

I don’t get the people who feel the need to dump entire media collections to upgrade to the latest format. Like 4K is great but DVDs are still perfectly sufficient for tons of digitally-shot shows and movies, let alone Blu which still outperforms streaming 90% of the time. #PhysicalMedia

Watching verticals is wild. Like a mix between anime 90s soaps and those foreign films that are so badly translated that the’ve lost all meaning. Except with American actors who seem just as confused about what they’re saying as the audience, and consequently portraying brutal scenes insincerely.

Always confuses me when people act like screenwriting for a micro budget is a huge challenge. Unless you’re a super spy or billionaire, just write what you know. If you can’t make it interesting, your characters probably aren’t that interesting to begin with.

After working on non-stop film projects for the past month I really thought I’d be ready to buckle up and edit. Instead, the sunshine is calling, and weirdly I just keep wanting to film more.

With the emergence of glossy AI filler, fast and cheap vfx and sudsy verticals, I think we’ll soon see a renewed hunger for unapologetically raw and real content. Be it run ‘n’ gun docs, reality TV, found footage or cinema verite, everything old will be new again.

The most common criticism I receive on my film projects is that they’re over-ambitious. It’s a fair observation; most of them would be stronger if I had reigned them in conceptually.

But no regrets.

The more ambitious you are, the harder you fall, the faster you learn, the quicker you grow.

Hadn’t directed any narrative work in five years and I was quietly driving me crazy. So we made a thing.

Lowest budget and least time I’ve ever had to direct a feature but I couldn’t be more stoked for the results. Sometimes less is more.
