It is a shame that this ALC article is paywalled and won't be read widely. It is an "obituary" for an NYT columnist that is full of beautiful, burning descriptions of a "far center" which dominates too much of liberal intelligentsia.

In it, Mangione laments the costs of healthcare and asks why the US has the most expensive healthcare in the world but is rated poorly for life expectancy. The US ranked 42 in life expectancy in 2007, per an Associated Press story from August 2007, and was ranked 49 as of 2022. However, according to the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, the country is expected to drop to 66th in the world in 2050.
