Not terrible. Not fantastic. Just fine. The Production design and effects are great, as is the quartet’s chemistry on screen. But the story and action are inert. And it doesn’t have anything to say or any kind of interesting read on its characters. It just kinda happens.

Hope is punk. Dogs are great. People who hurt them are evil. And James Gunn has delivered a rousing superhero blockbuster that shows there’s power in clinging to such true and simple axioms, even in a messy world that’s filled with monsters and cynics.

I love it as a modern western. I love the way it explores the dawning darkness that now gnaws at our anxieties in the 2020s. I love how willing it is to be unabashedly uproarious one moment and deeply unsettling the next. I love Joaquin Phoenix. I love this movie.

Part “I Think You Should Leave,” part “I Love You, Man,” part atmospheric A24 horror. Uproariously funny, deeply uncomfortable, consistently enthralling. See it before a Marvel takes its place at the theater.
