It happened on a play that was called a fumble, but was overturned by instant replay. There was so little time left that the team who recovered the fumble could have run out the clock and won. But given a second chance, the other team scored and then won in overtime.

One weird rule that actually went away is the "tuck rule". If a quarterback decided not to throw and he was tucking the ball back into his body and dropped it, it was an incomplete pass, not a fumble. They got rid of it after it altered the outcome of a playoff game after the 2001 season.
