New publication 🇨🇦🇪🇺: In this chapter, I address "The many meanings of the ‘Canada model’", where I present #CETA as a case of

1) ‘Gold standard’
2) Like-mindedness
3) Cautionary tale
4) Autonomy

Right on time 9 years after CETA was signed, and 8 since its provisional application began!

While I'm glad the NATO Summit was a success, using it as a platform for brushing aside the prohibition to use force – a core norm of international law – is problematic, as I stress in this brief interview. NATO's Article V is important for our security, but so is Article 2(4) of the UN Charter.

Of course! After all, the reference to “screwing the United States” in Article 3(5) TEU has its roots in this passage from the 1950 Schuman declaration:

“Les États-Unis ne seront pas entubés d'un coup … ils seront entubés par des réalisations concrètes créant d'abord une méchanceté de fait.”

Quick legal refresher after Musk’s push for U.S. withdrawal from NATO:

- Under U.S. foreign relations law (& practice), the President can unilaterally terminate treaties. No Congressional authorization is required (even though the North Atlantic Treaty was Senate approved).

How it started: 2008, I presented an essay on a stronger European security pillar in NATO at NATO HQ.

How it's going: 2025, back at NATO (new HQ though) with a delegation of the Dutch Advisory Council on International Affairs. Same topics, but dramatically raised urgency.
