5/ Alas, my $30 leaves me net negative when I factor in my annual distributor costs (I’m an independent artist so make my songs 100% solo at this stage). But I’m net positive in support, and hearing from those who have listened to, and deeply felt my music - is priceless.

4/ Not to mention label cuts if your song is signed. All of these things use time and money, and that return doesn’t come back in the form of stream income. It comes back in the form of people. Audiences who support their favourite artists at shows, who share their music and help them be discovered.

3/ But even popular artists have it tough. Software, additional producers, mixing and mastering engineers, time spent writing/recording, recurrent distributor fees. Then comes marketing, PR, running ads, interviews, social media, so on and so forth.

2/ Artists earn about $0.006 per stream. This number is skewed higher for bigger artists, and vice versa. Considering the cost to make music, you can’t really make anything if you solely produce and release music (at least from my viewpoint as an indie artist).
