I think it’s a trickle down effect. Suits see it and want that level of audience engagement

That level of fandom is encouraged by the artist (really their producers, studios, etc, but the artist is the face of it). Look at the biggest celebrity of this generation, Ms Swift. That is the core of her fandom and she's successful because of it.
